BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Rene Griffith is a Florida-based contemporary artist known for her spirited and multi-hued abstract paintings. Drawing inspiration from travel, memory, and personal experience, she creates richly layered works that explore a sense of place, atmosphere, and emotion. A notable highlight of her career was her two-person museum exhibition, Abstraction: Retrospective Memories, at the Foosaner Art Museum in Melbourne, Florida. The museum exhibition featured 52 of her paintings and showcased the evolution of her abstract work.
Born in Panama and raised in Florida, Griffith spent her childhood in a small coastal town on Florida's Space Coast dreaming of becoming an artist. Although her path to realizing that dream was unconventional, creativity remained a constant presence throughout her life. Largely self-taught, Griffith pursued higher education while raising a family and building a successful career in technical writing, marketing, and graphic design.
A pivotal chapter in Griffith’s art career began in the mid-1990s when she relocated to San Francisco and immersed herself in her artistic practice. Over the next decade, Griffith studied art and photography and developed her distinctive visual language using her vintage 1972 Polaroid SX-70 camera and hand-manipulating its film during the 60-second development process. Four of her large-format 20x24 Polaroid image transfers were acquired for the Marshall Field's Corporate Collection in Chicago, and she presented both solo and group exhibitions in the Bay Area. It was also during this time that her sister, an art enthusiast, introduced her to abstract art. For Griffith, it was love at first sight and she began to transition from photography to paint.
After returning to Florida in 2006, Griffith turned her focus to painting, developing the abstract and mixed-media works for which she is best known today. She continues to photograph for pleasure and often uses those digital images in her mixed-media artworks. Griffith's artwork has been exhibited in galleries and exhibitions throughout California, South Carolina, and Florida.
Griffith continues to travel the globe to be exposed to different cultures, people, and ideas.These experiences have greatly influenced her art making and life.
She maintains an active studio practice in Indialantic, Florida, and is currently represented by galleries in Vero Beach, St. Augustine, and Miami.
ARTIST STATEMENT
An observer once said to me, “your work not only makes me feel, it makes me think!”
My work lives in the space between abstraction and memory—color-driven, intuitive, built from places and moments that stayed with me long after I left them. I am drawn to abstract painting by an insatiable fascination with the mystery found between inner feelings and visual form. Each canvas becomes a journey into the unknown—a space where intuition guides my hand through new territories of color, texture, and movement. I surrender control of the painting process itself, allowing feelings, thoughts, and memories to show through choices: the sweep of a brushstroke, the transparency of a glaze, the mixture of unique hues. This art form strips away the safety of representation and asks me to trust in pure expression.
As an abstract painter, I allow myself to make instinctive decisions about color, shape, texture, and how layers build to create something that expresses what I'm feeling, thinking, or remembering. As a result, my paintings seem to have an ability to connect with people in ways I can’t predict or control. My hope is that viewers will find their own meaning in my work and connect their sentiments with those I have expressed in my art. And, in that shared space, a deeper connection can emerge—one that reminds us that although our experiences may be different, many of the feelings they evoke are universal.
